Common Foot Conditions and Treatments.

Dr. Klirsfeld treats a variety of foot problems that affect the lower limbs and ankle. In many cases, your health starts with your feet. Apart from carrying the weight for your entire body, your feet provide stability and balance. Several internal as well as external factors can influence foot problems. This can be a result of ill-fitted shoes, injury, weak foot ligaments, improper foot care or genetics. No matter what causes your chronic foot pain, the foot doctor can help.

Plantar Fasciitis (heel pain)

Although there can be several causes of heel pain, the most common one is plantar fasciitis. This is the result of a swelling of the connective tissue in the heel bone. It can be caused by a number of factors, including excessive use of the fascia, flat feet, wearing poorly fitted shoes or and injury that strains the fascia arch. Plantar fasciitis is characterized by the onset of pain on the underside of the heel which is usually aggravated early in the morning when you get up from bed.

Bunions

Bunions are a bone deformity that is normally distinguished as a prominent bump on the inner side of the foot at the base of the big toe. Also known as Hallux Valgus, bunions are very common, affecting one in every three persons. However, this foot malady leads to a distortion of the big toe, in which the toes are pointed inwards, leading to the protrusion of the bone. Bunions can be very painful. Other symptoms include inflammation, soreness and swelling on the lateral side of the big toe. Dr. Klirsfeld will give advice on the right type of footwear, exercises and supportive products to reduce the size of bunions.

Hammer Toes

Hammer toes is another condition that is caused by wearing shoes that don’t fit properly. This condition derives its name from the curling of the toes in the shape of a hammer. The podiatrist will prescribe orthopedic shoes which will alleviate this condition.

Ingrown Nails

This is one of the most painful conditions which is due to abnormal nail shape, poor nail cutting technique or ill fitted shoes. The podiatrist will remove a portion or an entire toenail. In some severe cases, surgery may be required.

Warts

Warts are the raised skin growths which are usually about the size of pin head. They are commonly picked up from public showers or swimming pools. Plantar warts appear at the bottom of the foot and are caused due to infection.

Sport Injuries

Sports foot injuries can be caused due to too much activity or trauma to the bone or ligament. It can lead to conditions like Achilles tendonitis, sesamoiditis and plantar fasciitis.
